Her First Love, His Mistake

Plot

It begins like this. Catherine knows Sonny through her mutual friends. She is also his brother’s close friend whom she went to high school with. They live in the same neighborhood and know just about the same people. They always seem to bump into each other a few times a week. Sonny is driving one day, sees Catherine and stops the van he is driving, which is his brother’s she later learns. They talk for a few minutes and he asks for her number. He tells her he has to get going and hope to see her around again. He calls her the same day and talks to her for a few hours. The next day he calls her and asks her if she wants to hang out with him. Sonny comes to pick up Catherine a block away from her house because she is not allowed to hang out with boys. Their first hangout is at the park in which each got to know the other by asking questions about friends, family, and school. He has an alcohol problem, even knowing this, she falls in love with him and they start to date. Whenever he gets drunk he would tell Catherine that he is not going to change and that he is bad. Sonny’s friends all know that he is dating Catherine. They date for about four months and then he stops calling her one day. The reason for this is because someone made a comment to him about her and his brother. She is heartbroken and doesn’t know what to do because this is her first boyfriend. She is confused, hurt, and doesn’t know what grave mistake she committed. She never bothers to call him either. She knows that she is too good for him and did everything possible for him. He never deserved her love which he took advantage of. He never tried to change his way of life for his girl.

Characters

His name is Sonny, at five foot one inch, short for a male who is twenty-two years old. Even though he is twenty-two, he looks like he’s sixteen. He works at a book company where he packs and ships out books. He has a small body in which you would think that he is weak, but in reality he is as strong as two males put together. His small, brown eyes make him look innocent with the boyish black hair. When you look at his lips and teeth, you can tell he smokes because it is so pink and yellow. His complexion is of a light brown, lighter than hers. Sonny never has a clean-cut shave because he hates shaving and he feels the shabby look makes him seem older than what he is. He always dresses in a pair of jeans and t-shirt. He dropped out of high school because he was too busy hanging out with his friends, drinking, and smoking. She was the best thing that ever happened to him, he said so when he spoke to her a year after he broke up with her and stopped talking to her.
She is shorter than he is, at four foot eleven inches. However, she had everything else going for her. She is smart, intelligent, pretty, sweet, and innocent. Everything opposite of what he was. She has a round face with small, dark black eyes. These eyes sparkled whenever she was talking to someone whom she liked. She always hid behind her radiating smile which everyone loves. She always told him that he’s smart and to go back to school to become someone. She always dressed as if she’s going out, either in skirts and tank tops or jeans with a dressy top. All she wanted from him was his love, time, and for him to change for the better. She didn’t want him to be an alcoholic anymore. She was tired of getting the calls at midnight letting her know that he’s somewhere on a street drunk. It’s her first year of college in which she’s trying to juggle her first love and the amount of studying she has to accomplish.

Scene

Catherine starts to date Sonny regardless of his alcohol problem. After talking to him everyday and hanging out with him for a few weeks, she develops feelings for him. For her the relationship is much harder because this is her first boyfriend and relationship. Sonny and Catherine realize that Sonny is not the right guy for Catherine, however, both like each other too much and try to let that feeling pass. On their first hang out, they are sitting in the park for two hours talking. Catherine starts to get phone calls from home because she didn’t tell her mother where or with who she was going. Instead of answering, she ignores the call. This is the moment when Catherine starts to sneak out of the house and come home late so that she can be with Sonny. Soon Catherine sees the drunken Sonny and tries to help him by talking to him. She wants him to get help. She knows he is a better person. He tells her that he doesn’t want to stop and that he is alright. “It is a part of me now”, Sonny says. He says that school isn’t a place for him to go back to anymore and that he is going to work the job he has or get a city job.
Although Catherine knows Sonny’s friends, she soon meets Sonny’s closest friends as his girlfriend. They all like her and think that he has found a decent, nice girl. They believe he might change his way of life now that she is in his life. Sonny soon starts to act differently and they hang out less. She asks him what is wrong and at first he says nothing. He then says that people are talking that he and his brother are dating the same girl.
“Who said that?” she asks angrily.
“It doesn’t matter, it’s being said and I don’t want people to say that”, he says.
“Well you know that he and I are friends and that we went to school together”, she says.
She gets’s mad and hangs up on him. She spent months crying and wondering what had happened and if he really ever cared at all because he never bothered to call her back. He called her a year and four months later, the day after her twentieth birthday. He wanted to apologize and realized that he had made a mistake. He wanted her back. By then she was over him and had moved on.
“You won’t give me another chance?” he asks.
“No, you believed what others had to say. Go back to that person who told you whatever they told you back then. Then tell them “thank you” for making me lose something great in my life that I can’t get back”, she tells him. That day, she hung up on him and ignored all his calls afterwards.

  1. Great. Some gaps right about here in the summary: 'Whenever he gets drunk he would tell Catherine that he is not going to change and that he is bad. Sonny’s friends all know that he is dating Catherine. They date for about four months and then he stops calling her one day.' They're likely not gaps in your mind, just places where I want you to realize that you're talking about longer periods of time, and not exactly scenes. How will you show 'whenever he gets drunk...' for example. Will you show us one time? More than one? How will you handle the passage of the 'four months'? They seem like the right decisions, you'll just need to consider how you'll actually depict them.
