“What are you doing this Saturday?”
“Well, I have no plans.”
“Great, I will see you this Saturday then.”
“Okay.”
Jane lives in South part of Connecticut. Steve lives in New York City. They were able to meet each other when Jane came to New York about two weeks ago. Jane’s friend Nicole introduced her friend Steve to Jane at the bar. Steve fell in love with Jane at first sight.
It’s Saturday afternoon. Jane could hear the sound of car outside her house. There was Steve waiting in the car.
“Hey Steve, welcome to Connecticut.”
“Where are we going today?”
“To my secret little place.”
They held hands together and the sunlight was brighter than ever. They arrived at the base of East Rock Mountain in New Haven. Steve drove all the way to the top of the mountain.
“I usually come here when I want to meditate or to think about something. This place refreshes my memory and stuff.” Jane said.
“I envy you Jane. I wish I have a place like this near my area.”
From the top of the mountain, everything they saw looked tiny such as buildings, cars, even people. The cars were moving but they looked like toys. Steve spread a mat on the grass and took out a sandwich he made for Jane. Jane was impressed by his sincerity and preparedness. After they finished their lunch, Jane and Steve started to talk. Steve told Jane that he was studying at medical school and going to be a doctor. Jane was studying hospital management. Jane expressed how she was so happy and comfortable as if they have been good friends for a long time. She never felt like this before. She appreciated the fact that he truly cared about her. Jane definitely thought about having a long-term relationship with Steve. But somehow, Steve kept trying to avoid talking about long-term relationship and future type of conversation. He only cared about the present like other guys. Steve thought his vision was more important than anything else in the world. By listening to his dazzling dream he had, Jane got into him even more.
When Jane was alone by herself, all she could think about was Steve. She knew when she falls for someone, she had hard time concentrating on other things in her life. Love was first thing for her. Jane kept calling Steve whenever she missed him and wanted to talk to him. Jane felt she couldn’t live without Steve. Jane started to be obsessive with Steve. Whenever she couldn’t reach Steve, she began to feel very anxious that he might be cheating on her. As Jane’s love for him got deeper, it seemed like Steve was running away from her.
One day, Jane decided to go to see Steve without telling him. Jane wanted to surprise him. She made his favorite cupcake which was red velvet. By the time she arrived at Steve’s house, Jane was astonished and she dropped her cupcake box. Jane saw Nicole and Steve coming out of his house, holding their hands together. Jane never imagined this was going to happen in her life. At that moment, every single movement of Steve and Nicole appeared in slow motion. His rigid eye movement, stunned face, fake smile to make it seem like it was nothing just frustrated Jane so much that it almost made her faint.
“…………….Hi.”
After a long silence, Nicole broke the air. Jane could not even look at her in the eyes. Jane did not even know why but she felt guilty. It was not her fault but just by looking at them, she felt that she should not have witnessed them together in the first place.
“I’m going to go now.”
Jane tried to move, but strangely, it was not easy. She forced herself to step forward. Jane desperately wanted Steve to say something. But he did not say a single word. He just stood there in silence. Jane did not turn around and looked them once. After she got back home, the obscene moment that she had observed replayed over and over again in her mind. She could not even remember how she got back home. The world in front of her seemed so cold like nobody was on her side.
Next day, Steve called Jane. She did not want to pick up the phone so she ignored them several times. She felt that if she picked up the phone, their relationship would end right there and then forever. Jane did not want to lose him because she was sure he was the only one for her. But Steve won’t give up calling her. She finally answered his call. Their conversation started and their last word was like this.
“How could you do this to me? You told me you were going to love me forever”
Jane cried.
“I’m tired of this… I can’t take this anymore. I got enough of you!” Steve replied.
“…..”
She thought he was going to at least say that he was sorry. He did not and Jane had nothing to say but to hang up the phone.
This is how their relationship ended.
After they broke up, a week was like a year to Jane. Jane couldn’t eat well, talk well, and live well. She couldn’t stop thinking about him. She was in denial that Steve left her. She hoped and prayed that Steve might come back to her. On the second week of pain and crying, she eventually realized that she had to move on. Jane decided to work hard so she can forget Steve. She worked at a restaurant at night and studied during the day. She was able to focused on studying because she learned from the mistakes. Jane figured out why he got tired of her. Her friend Nicole was such a cool and aggressive businesswoman. She was a very independent woman. For Nicole, work and love was two different things. Jane realized how she acted was wrong. She only wanted someone beside her, someone to talk to, and someone to guide her. As it was, things never worked out for them. It was true that Jane couldn’t get over him completely, but she tried to move on and pursue her dream gradually.
